It’s the Most BUSIEST Time of the Year

by Meagan Waite, Assistant Director - My Discovery Destination!

December can be truly magical–colored lights and decorations, falling snow (if we’re lucky), and festive music. Kids are out of school for a few weeks, and for the most part, people are more giving and mindful of those in need. There are lots of cheery activities to occupy one’s time. It’s easy to get wrapped up (ha!) in the busy-ness of all the amazing events and lose sight of what’s really important...doing things together as a family, whatever your family looks like!

My Discovery Destination! is here to help. Every pursuit we have on our do-not-miss-this holiday list is specifically designed to bring your family together to celebrate the season. Do we recommend you fully engage in EACH and EVERY undertaking we have to offer? No, of course not. We do want you to be informed so you can make decisions as a family about which activities fit your family size, ages, and interest to provide the best quality time together for your family.

Here are some things we have to offer:

READ 20^30

by Meagan Waite, Assistant Director - My Discovery Destination! In one of my favorite movies, a minor character delivered a major line about the written word. He said that as far as he was concerned, it was “mankind's greatest achievement.” If society is able to read, there is nothing that cannot be learned.  Reading has SO MANY benefits that I could go on and on about it, but I’m afraid I would never get to what I’d really like to share with you today if I did, so I won’t. (However, I DO invite you to learn more about reading together by checking out this Uplift Families article from earlier this year.) What I’d really like to do today is issue you a challenge. But first, a little information is in order.  On November 1, PBS Utah is hosting its 29th Annual Reading Marathon . PBS Utah is inviting you to become a “reading superhero” by reading (by yourself, with a child, or both) at least 20 minutes each day for a total of 600 minutes between November 1 and November 30. In doi...

Oh, The Places You'll Go...

by Meagan Waite, Assistant Director - My Discovery Destination! Dr. Seuss, the beloved children’s author, wrote “Green Eggs and Ham” on a bet. The co-founder of Random House Publishing, Mr. Bennett Cerf, wagered that Seuss couldn’t write a book that had fewer than 50 unique words. Seuss won 50 bucks, and we have a piece of literary art with which one cannot help but rhyme along.  If you haven’t read it, you should. It can get you thinking about the relationship between what you believe and what you experience. It can encourage you to think outside the box (no would-nots, could-nots for you!) and try new things. It can give you courage to show resilience in the face of challenges, opposition, and adversity. Yes, reading can do that for you. March is National Reading Month. It has been designated as such in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 2. My Discovery Destination! is celebrating. How? With a Discovery Hunt, of course! In fact, we bet YOU that you are going to love this ...

Follow the Green Ribbon Road

Meagan Waite, Assistant Director - My Discovery Destination! I used to work for a local school district. I had summers off, and they always flew by. I once had a boss tell me, “Once July 24 (which is a holiday in Utah) is here, summer is OVER!” She wasn’t wrong.  Before long we will again be acutely aware of school zones, crossing guards, small human bicyclists, and that occasional elementary child that may dart out in the street. Back-to-school time can be a little scary as we all get used to the start-of-the-year school-yard melee. My Discovery Destination! and the Discovery Family Coalition have “gamified” prevention in their quest to get every family talking about important issues like pedestrian safety, mental health, drug safety, online safety, bullying prevention and more. Green Ribbon Week is an annual safety program held in conjunction with the beginning of school to educate families and communities about pedestrian and bike safety and to ensure every child knows how to ge...
